Australian Data Breaches More Costly Than Ever: Report

The average cost of a data breach for Australian organisations has grown to A$4.19M in 2026, according to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2026. 

Good News / Bad News 

The good news - if there’s anything “good” about losing $4M to hackers - is that Australia ranked 14th of the 16 countries IBM analysed, ahead of only India and Brazil.  We’re also well below the global average of A$7.07M. 

The bad news is that Australian breach costs jumped 16% year on year, outpacing the global increase of 12%. Only South Africa (22%) and Germany (18%) saw sharper rises. Costs rose in every region this year, and Australia is climbing faster than most. 

In other words, the gap between Australia and the rest of the world is closing. 

Record Global Costs 

Globally, breach costs hit a record high, driven largely by detection, escalation and lost business costs. The mean time to identify and contain a breach rose to 247 days, reversing five years of improvement.  

Phishing remained the top initial attack vector for the 4th year running, and it was also the costliest at A$7.18M per breach. AI-driven attacks are making breaches faster and cheaper to launch, and more expensive to find and fix.
