Sugar Attack Illustrates Supply Chain Exposure

Last week’s cyber attack on Australia's second-largest sugar producer demonstrates how cyber exposures within a supply chain can flow on to disrupt other organisations within that supply chain. 

Sugar Shutdown 

Mackay Sugar operates three mills and generates annual revenue of more than $420 million, supplying raw sugar to domestic customers and export markets across Asia.  It reported yesterday that a cybersecurity incident had forced two of its three major sugar mills to shut down, bringing harvesting operations in the region to a halt.   

Sugar milling and cane haulage operations at both the Farleigh and Racecourse mills have been suspended. Both facilities had only recently begun the annual sugarcane crushing season.   

Growers reliant on the mills have needed to immediately cease harvesting sugarcane until the mills’ operations can be restored.  Canegrowers Mackay, the representative body for local sugarcane farmers, said in statement: "Mackay Sugar has asked for all harvesting to cease immediately and not resume until further communication comes directly from the company."
