Why Your iPaaS Isn’t an MFT
3 July 2026
If your organisation is already running an integration platform (e.g. Boomi or MuleSoft) you might be tempted to ask: do we really need a separate Managed File Transfer (MFT) tool?
After all, these platforms can move files, support SFTP, and handle scheduling. Why add another product to the stack?
Here’s why.
Connecting vs Governing
There’s a fundamental difference in design philosophy between iPaaS and MFT. And that distinction matters enormously when it comes to cyber security.
iPaaS platforms are built to connect systems. MFT solutions are built to govern file movement. When regulatory compliance, sensitive data, and partner SLAs matter – and that’s all the time – you need the security and protections of an MFT.
Compliance Can’t Be an Afterthought
Government regulations on data transfer and use don't just require that data is transferred securely. They require that you can prove it. Dedicated MFT platforms such as the category-leading GoAnywhere MFT are built from the ground up with audit trails, tamper-evident logs, and compliance reporting baked in. They enable you to demonstrate exactly who sent what, when, to whom… and whether it was received.
While iPaaS platforms log integration activity, it’s not with the depth or structure that compliance auditors expect. Retrofitting that level of accountability onto a general-purpose integration tool is painful, expensive, and often incomplete.
Perimeter Security
File exchange with external partners - suppliers, customers, banks, government agencies - happens at the edge of your network. That's a high-risk zone. Dedicated MFT solutions are designed for this, offering DMZ support, reverse proxy configurations, and hardened perimeter security that keeps your internal systems shielded even when exchanging data externally.
iPaaS tools are optimised for internal and cloud-to-cloud integration. Extending them to handle secure external file exchange typically requires significant custom configuration and ongoing maintenance.
That’s expensive when you’re using the wrong tool for the job.
Irrefutable Proof of Delivery
In regulated industries and B2B commerce, it's not enough to send a file - you need cryptographic proof it was delivered and received intact. MFT solutions provide non-repudiation capabilities, including digital signatures and delivery receipts, that hold up under legal and regulatory scrutiny.
That’s simply not a core feature of iPaaS platforms.
Built to Scale Up
MFT solutions handle large file volumes natively with resumable transfers, checkpointing, and throughput optimisation designed specifically for bulk file movement. If a transfer fails midway through a multi-gigabyte file, an MFT tool picks up where it left off. Most iPaaS platforms will restart from scratch - inefficient and potentially costly.
Right Tool for the Job
None of this is intended to imply that iPaaS platforms aren't valuable. But file governance is a specialised discipline. Trying to make a general-purpose integration platform do it is costly, and it creates gaps in security, compliance, and operational visibility.
Smart enterprise architectures use a dedicated MFT solution for governed, auditable, secure file exchange.
