  • Rate Rise Should Spur Rethink | GSA

< News Rate Rise Should Spur Rethink 13 Nov 2023 Following the Reserve Bank’s decision to further hike interest rates, it’s timely for business leaders to explore how they can minimise any negative impacts on their companies. Rowan Tracey, Partner at HLB Mann Judd , Australian businesses would need to “find efficiencies and cut operating costs”. “The Reserve Bank’s decision … will impact business margins, particularly small to medium businesses with high debt and low capital. The natural reflex for businesses is to raise prices to even out the balance sheet, which would be fine in a more buoyant economy. (But) rising fuel prices and cost of living already has many scrambling to find ways of cutting costs, including their current expenditure.” Rowan offers these alternative suggestions to businesses wanting to maintain margins without imposing price hikes: 1. Improve Productivity & Efficiency: Review processes and output and look at ways to improve or streamline your operations, such as automation of processes including business software. 2. Strategically Cut Costs: Review your current service providers and contracts and compare to the current market. 3. Revisit Your Banking & Financial Products: Look beyond the short-term and make sure the interest rate on your business loans is competitive. 4. Develop a Pricing Strategy : Look at ways to leverage or bundle existing goods and services. 5. Reconsider Your Supply Chain : Consider reducing risks by finding a domestic supplier to slash the costs of freight and storage. 6. Review Workforce Arrangements: Consider offering flexible work arrangements, nine-day fortnights, and training and development opportunities - particularly those subsidised by government. One way to address Item #1 (“Improve Productivity and Efficiency”) is to reconsider how your business transfers data. Moving data – between employees, with customers, and with your supply chain partners – is now a “core process” for every modern business. That makes it a target for improving efficiency and productivity. A Managed File Transfer solution, such as GoAnywhere MFT, is more cost-effective and efficient than having your staff waste time on old-fashioned and risky manual approaches. In fact, a study by Aberdeen Group found that businesses which invested a little in a professional Managed File Transfer solution had a median return of almost 500 times their investment! Generic Systems Australia are your local experts in file transfer technologies. • 55 Trillion File & Object Transfers in 2025 | GSA

< News 55 Trillion File & Object Transfers in 2025 13 Jan 2026 One of the things I mused over during the new year break was “How many files did Australians transfer during 2025?” I asked an AI to assist me in a sweep of available data sources and come up with a reasoned estimation. Humans + Hidden When most people think about digital activity, they picture emails, cloud uploads, or the occasional shared document. Yet when we model Australia’s full digital ecosystem across 2025, a very different picture emerges. Human‑initiated file sharing — email attachments, messaging app files, cloud uploads — accounts for only a tiny fraction of the nation’s digital movement. Analysis places that figure at around 82 billion files per year, a substantial number on its own. But layering in the automated and infrastructural systems that underpin modern digital life, the scale expands dramatically. To reach an estimate of the total, four additional categories need to be accounted for. Automated system backups are the first major contributor. By estimating the number of organisations using cloud‑based incremental backup and applying conservative daily change rates, we arrived at roughly 11 trillion backup‑related file movements annually. Next came cloud sync events , driven by photo libraries, document updates, and multi‑device workflows. With around 60% of Australians using at least one active sync service, this added another 115 billion events. The real explosion came from Content Delivery Networks (CDNs). Every webpage, app screen, and embedded image is delivered as a collection of discrete objects. By modelling daily request volumes and average objects per request, we estimated 34.4 trillion CDN object transfers in 2025. Finally, we incorporated machine‑to‑machine (M2M) activity—the internal chatter of microservices, logs, IoT payloads, and replication events—using a conservative multiplier. This added another 11.4 trillion movements. Together, these layers produced a staggering total: approximately 50–60 trillion digital file and object transfers across Australia in 2025. Humans are barely the spark; the infrastructure is the inferno. Implications for Organisations The scale of data movement across Australia has profound implications for organisations. When file movement becomes this vast, distributed, and automated, traditional ad‑hoc transfer methods simply can’t keep up. Security gaps widen, auditability collapses, and operational risk multiplies. That’s why Managed File Transfer (MFT) technology should no longer be considered “nice to have”. MFT provides a controlled, encrypted, policy‑driven framework for moving data across systems, partners, and cloud environments. It brings visibility to the invisible, governance to the chaotic, and reliability to the mission‑critical. In a world where trillions of transfers happen without a human ever touching a keyboard, MFT is the anchor that keeps organisations secure, compliant, and in control. Here to Help At Generic Systems Australia , we’re Australia’s and New Zealand’s experts in helping businesses implement and take leverage MFT solutions. • Sound Advice on Choosing a New MFT | GSA

< News Sound Advice on Choosing a New MFT 7 May 2024 Tech Wire Asia , an independent tech news website that covers enterprise and technology across the Asia-Pacific region, offers sound advice to help companies choose a new Managed File Transfer (MFT) solution. The Shadow of Clop Tech Wire Asia issued their advice in the wake of attacks last year by Clop, a notorious ransomware group, on the online file transfer tool MOVEit. PWC’s Australian unit, Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad and Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad in Malaysia were among APAC region victims of Clop’s attacks. While Tech Wire Asia said it did not “insinuate an everlasting vulnerability in MOVEit or imply that its usage should be permanently discontinued”, it noted that it had received “a wave of enquiries from current and prospective customers about the continued safety of using MOVEit” in the wake of the attack. In response, the website offered this advice for those wishing to move on from MOVEit . Crucial Considerations Tech Wire Asia said the crucial consideration in choosing the best file transfer software is finding an MFT solution that is simple, capable of encrypting sensitive data, can automate transfers, meets compliance regulations, and operates seamlessly across various platforms. It noted that there are many aspects and features to consider while choosing MFT software, including: Average daily file transfer volume; Regulatory obligations; Industry-specific needs; and Budget. Other vital features could include: Advanced auditing and tracking abilities; Clustering functionality; Cloud integrations; Capability to translate EDI files; and Availability of remote agents. The website recommended that selecting the appropriate MFT solution should be driven by a company’s specific requirements. GoAnywhere MFT highly-regarded In its review of contenders to replace MOVEit, Tech Wire Asia described GoAnywhere MFT as “a sophisticated enterprise solution for transfers and file management”, saying that the product “excels at securing file transfers across multiple platforms, protocols, and encryption standards”. The website noted that GoAnywhere is designed for SMEs and Enterprises, and is deployable on-premise, in the cloud, or hybrid environments, enabling secure data exchange between organisations, employees, customers, and trading partners. In the capacity of enterprise-secure file transfer software, GoAnywhere shields data, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards. Its integration prowess also extends to applications like Salesforce and SharePoint. Try Before You Buy In conclusion, Tech Wire Asia “highly recommended” that customers moving on from MOVEit take advantage of a free trial of new MFT software. Previous Next

  • GoAnywhere's Cloud Connectors | GSA

< News GoAnywhere's Cloud Connectors 17 Mar 2024 Seamlessly integrate GoAnywhere with External Services via Cloud Connectors Cloud Connectors enable you to easily and securely transfer files between your organisation and external cloud services and applications. Also referred to as “cloud integrations”, Cloud Connectors offer out-of-the-box connectors for GoAnywhere to popular services including Salesforce, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Box, and Dropbox. For example: Let’s say one of your trading partners requests an important file and wants you to share it via a folder in Dropbox. Or perhaps you have contacts or billing information you want to update automatically in Salesforce. Cloud Connectors enable you to easily do so. Broad Range Cloud Connectors are easily downloaded from GoAnywhere MFT’s integrated Marketplace, which features Connectors for the most commonly used cloud services. These include: • Alibaba Object Storage Service • Amazon Cloud Trail, CloudWatch, EC2, Lambda, SNS, and SQS • Atlassian JIRA • Automate Plus • Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 (superseded by Gen2) and Storage Queue • Box • Citrix ShareFile • Dropbox • Egnyte • GateScanner CDR • GoAnywhere Command • Google Cloud Storage, Drive, and Translate • JAMS • Jenkins • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, 365 CRM, OneDrive, Sharepoint Online and Sharepoint On-Premise • OPSWAT MetaDefender • Salesforce • ServiceNow • SMA OpCon Scheduler • SOS Berlin JobScheduler (Online version not supported) • Trello • Veeva CRM • Votiro • Webdocs • Zendesk (Online version not supported) Cloud Connectors can integrate with available on-premise and online versions of third-party software unless otherwise noted. How to Configure Cloud Connectors Once a Cloud Connector is installed, you can configure the connection properties as a GoAnywhere Resource. With this resource, you only need to specify the connection once before being able to seamlessly reuse it in any of your workflows and cloud file transfers. A Cloud Connector definition contains the various actions required to communicate with cloud applications. For example: authentication logging file transfer file management and error handling. In GoAnywhere, these actions appear as elements located under the Cloud Connector in the GoAnywhere Project Designer. Elements can be incorporated into your workflows alongside other project tasks, and processes can even be automated between multiple web and cloud services at once. New GoAnywhere connectors can be downloaded without needing to update the software. No Connector? No problem! While GoAnywhere Marketplace contains a broad array of Cloud Connectors, you may also want to connect to a unique external service. Custom connectors are the answer! At Generic Systems Australia, we can design and develop Custom Connectors for you, using GoAnywhere’s Cloud Connector Designer. If you’d like to discuss how your organisation’s file transfers to external cloud providers can be made more efficient and secure, please feel to contact our Business Manager, Bradley Copson (mail to: bradley@gensys.com.au ). • ASD Advises Replacement of Risky Legacy Tech | GSA

< News ASD Advises Replacement of Risky Legacy Tech 9 June 2026 When it comes to cyber security, the Australian Signals Directorate - our nation's top cyber security agency - knows its stuff. So when it advises that we should treat legacy IT as a liability, that's advice worth heeding. One all-too-common form of legacy IT is the use of batch files and scripts to move files between enterprise systems. What was once a quick and easy way to shuttle data has become a principal point of failure in modern IT environments. Scripts are brittle - a tiny change in a directory name, a certificate expiry, or a vendor endpoint can cause silent failures. They're also inherently insecure, with hard‑coded credentials, inconsistent encryption practices, and ad‑hoc error handling creating gaps for attackers can exploit. Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions such as the class-leading GoAnywhere MFT replace legacy scripts with an automated, secure, centralised auditable system. They're a highly cost-effective investment in your organisation's security, reliability and efficiency. If you'd like an obligation-free chat with an Australian-based expert in MFT, please feel welcome to get in touch. Previous Next

  • How to Protect Your Customers’ Personal Identifiable Information | GSA

< News How to Protect Your Customers’ Personal Identifiable Information 8 Nov 2024 Protecting customers’ Personal Identifiable Information (PII) has fast become a critical duty of care for every organisation. What is PII, and why is it valuable? PII includes information such as Tax File Numbers, Medicare numbers and other health records, credit card details, student addresses and more. Cybercriminals attempt to access PII for financial gain, either directly – by selling it to data brokers on the dark web – or indirectly, by identity theft. Stolen PII can be used by hackers to open bogus credit card and bank accounts, and to socially engineer attacks using methods such as phishing and ransomware. Organisations need to zealously protect the PII provided to them by customers – not only for the sake of maintaining trust, but also to guard against heavy sanctions for non-compliance by regulators such as ASIC and the ACCC. And those compliance requirements are ramping up. Just last month, Australia’s federal government introduced legislation to parliament which will revolutionise Australia’s cyber security preparedness by imposing new protection standards and reporting requirements on local businesses. International Obligations However, compliance requirements for the protection of PII don’t stop at our national borders. For example, businesses with customers in Europe need to comply with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Local businesses trading in the US need to comply with America’s Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Federal Information Security Management Act, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, Gramm-Leach Bliley Act and California Consumer Privacy Act. Rising Risks and Impacts Recent statistics demonstrate the growing risk and significant impact of PII data breaches. Verizon’s Data Breach Investigation Report for 2024 shows that some 60% of data breaches involve some form of personal information. And IBM’s 2024 Cost of a Data Breach Report revealed the global average cost of a data breach now exceeds A$7 million. Protecting PII Stepping up to the needs of PII guardianship requires both technology solutions and sound business practices. Layered defences, with integrated solutions that address encryption, threat protection, and data loss prevention, enable safe collaboration without risking malware, mishandled data, breaches and non-compliance. Given most breaches involve a human element, technology solutions need to be automated and easy for employees to use. Software needs to be able to manage: How access to data is granted; How access is authenticated; How access is tracked and controlled; and How access be speedily revoked, when needed. Layered Protection A standalone managed file transfer (MFT) solution – such as GoAnywhere MFT - is a great first layer of defence. It provides security for files at rest and in-transit. However, integrating Threat Protection as an additional layer enables you to take appropriate action when there’s PII in the data moving in and out of your organisation. Based on rules you predefine, our Advanced Threat Protection Bundle can mask, remove, or permit PII to be moved within your organisation and beyond, via a Secure ICAP Gateway. Medical Case Study A medical enterprise needed to transfer attachments between employees and trading partners containing detailed billing information. They had long used a managed file transfer solution to exchange patient records within and outside the organisation. However, they realised they needed to further safeguard patients’ PII via deep content inspection. The organisation integrated GoAnywhere MFT with Secure ICAP Gateway, adding anti-virus protection as well as structural “sanitisation” of files being transferred. Their combined MFT/Advanced Threat Protection now works to: Inspect for malware and viruses; Intercept content based on threat protection and data loss prevention requirements; Run rule sets such as renaming, script removal, keyword searches to control if content is allowed in or is blocked; and Sanitise PII content to permit ongoing transfer (or block it, if content cannot be adequately sanitised). Thanks to layered protection, the organisation can now exchange patient records free from viruses and malware, while only disclosing a use-appropriate level of PII. Controlling PII Disclosure Adding granular rules-based controls to data handling is the “killer feature” of Advanced Threat Protection. For example: You can permit some specified individuals to transmit PII, but not everyone. You can apply role-based access to PII. You can audit who is sending what information. GoAnywhere MFT’s encryption can be enhanced by limiting who can transfer PII data and what that data contains. The automatic detection and sanitisation of files removes some of the human factor risks so that employees can focus on their work instead of fussing with manual interventions. Augmenting technical solutions with employee training further reduces human factor risks. Here to Help Generic Systems Australia are the Asia-Pacific region’s experts in deploying Managed File Transfer and Advanced Threat Protection. We’ve assisted dozens of organisations to protect their PII and secure their file transfers, while keeping their businesses running smoothly. If you’d like to discuss how we can help you, please feel welcome to contact me . I’m always happy to have an obligation-free chat and explain how simply we can transition you from outdated protocols and approaches. I can even arrange a simple, zero-cost Proof of Concept. • Painful Lesson for Australian Educational Institutions | GSA

< News Painful Lesson for Australian Educational Institutions 12 May 2026 The recent wave of cyber-attacks targeting Australian educational institutions has exposed a hard truth: when organisations rely on ad‑hoc, legacy, or unsecured methods to move sensitive data, they create the perfect conditions for a breach. These incidents are a stark reminder that Managed File Transfer (MFT) is no longer optional infrastructure - it’s essential security. The Weak Link Educational institutions handle enormous volumes of sensitive information: student records, financial data, research IP, HR files, partner data exchanges, and more. Yet many still depend on a patchwork of manual scripts, outdated FTP servers, email attachments, or cloud‑sharing links to move that data between systems and partners. This creates three systemic weaknesses: No central control : IT teams can’t see who is moving what, where, or when. No consistent security : encryption, authentication, and access controls vary wildly across systems. No audit trail : when something goes wrong, there’s no reliable way to trace the breach. The recent hack exploited exactly these gaps. Attackers didn’t need to break through a fortified perimeter; they simply targeted the weakest, least‑monitored file movement channels. MFT would have closed the door A modern Managed File Transfer (MFT) solution eliminates the chaos of uncontrolled file movement by replacing it with a single, secure, governed platform. For institutions under pressure to protect data, MFT delivers four critical capabilities: End ‑ to ‑ end encryption and hardened protocols: Sensitive files are encrypted in transit and at rest, using secure, modern standards - not outdated FTP or unsecured email. Centralised visibility and control: IT teams gain a real‑time dashboard showing every transfer, every user, every endpoint. Nothing moves without being logged. Automated workflows that remove human error: Manual scripts and ad‑hoc processes are replaced with reliable, repeatable automation that attackers can’t easily exploit. Compliance ‑ ready audit trails: When regulators or internal auditors ask for evidence, MFT provides complete, tamper‑proof logs. Lesson Learned? The attack on educational institutions wasn’t an anomaly - it was a warning for every organisation. Any IT team still relying on unsecured or inconsistent file‑transfer methods is exposed. Cybercriminals know that file movement is often the soft underbelly of an otherwise secure environment. A Managed File Transfer solution transforms that vulnerability into a strength. It gives organisations the security, visibility, and governance needed to protect their most valuable data - before an attacker gets to it. Local Help On Hand Generic Systems Australia has decades of experience helping Australian and New Zealand organisations keep hackers at bay through affordable MFT solutions. If you’d like to discuss how MFT could improve your cyber security and organisational efficiency, please feel welcome to get in touch . Previous Next

  • Record Quarter for Local Ransomware Attacks | GSA

< News Record Quarter for Local Ransomware Attacks 13 May 2025 The first quarter of 2025 was the worst ever for ransomware attacks, with the highest-ever number of organisations named on data-leak sites. The Q1/25 surge was driven by major activity spikes from ransomware groups Cl0p, Medusa, and FunkSec. · Cl0p, who accounted for more than third of all successful attacks, exploited zero-day vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-50623 and CVE-2024-55956) in Cleo managed file transfer (MFT) solutions, fuelling a 23% increase in overall ransomware activity between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025. · Ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) group Medusa capitalised on the void left by disrupted ransomware gangs in late 2024, increasingly targeting critical infrastructure. · FunkSec utilised AI to develop malware which infiltrated 152 named victims this quarter. Australian Orgs Under Attack Australia ranked sixth among the most targeted nations for ransomware attacks in February. We were the 11th most affected country for data breaches last year, with 47 million Australian accounts exposed - an astonishing average of one breach per second . Since 2004, Australia has experienced 192.5 million breached accounts, the highest number in the Oceania region. More than 49 million unique Australian email addresses have been exposed, often alongside sensitive information such as passwords and contact details. Changed Ransomware Tactics According to Bitdefender, cybercriminals are increasingly targeting newly discovered vulnerabilities in internet-facing devices, rather than focusing on specific industries or businesses. Cybercriminals reportedly scan for new software vulnerabilities within hours of them being publicly disclosed. After accessing a targeted system, they then take time to manually infiltrate deeper, often delaying ransomware deployment by weeks or months.
