< News GenAI Cyber Attacks on the Rise: Gartner 30 Sept 2025 Attacks using Generative AI (“GenAI”) for phishing, deepfakes and social engineering have become mainstream, and attacks on GenAI application infrastructure and prompt-based manipulations are emerging. These are among the troubling findings of a recent survey of cyber security leaders by Gartner, the technology insights company. GenAI is a form of artificial intelligence designed to create original content—such as text, images, music, video, or code—based on patterns it learns from existing data. Unlike traditional AI which classifies or predicts, GenAI generates new data that mimics human creativity. Rise of the Machines 62% of organisations experienced a deepfake attack involving social engineering or exploiting automated processes. These attacks included: deepfake videos used against automated face biometrics or identity verification (29%); deepfake audio clips used against automated voice biometrics (32%); social engineering with deepfake during video calls with an employee (36%); and social engineering with deepfake during audio calls with an employee (44%). In addition, 29% of cybersecurity leaders reported that their organisations had experienced an attack on enterprise GenAI infrastructure in the last 12 months. 32% said they experienced an attack on AI applications that leveraged the application prompt during the last 12 months. Gartner said that chatbot assistants are vulnerable to a variety of adversarial prompting techniques, such as attackers generating prompts to manipulate large language models (LLMs) or multimodal models into generating biased or malicious output. Emerging Threats Speaking at a Gartner Security and Risk Management Summit in London, Akif Khan, Gartner’s specialist VP in identity and access management, said: “As adoption accelerates, attacks leveraging GenAI for phishing, deepfakes and social engineering have become mainstream, while other threats — such as attacks on GenAI application infrastructure and prompt-based manipulations — are emerging and gaining traction.” While 67% of cybersecurity leaders said emerging GenAI risks demand significant changes to existing cybersecurity approaches, Gartner said a more balanced strategy is warranted. “Rather than making sweeping changes or isolated investments, organisations should strengthen core controls and implement targeted measures for each new risk category,” Khan said. < News Australian Govt’s “Horizon 2” Comes Into View 5 Aug 2025 The Australian Government has invited input on the key policy and program outcomes the nation needs to achieve under the 2023 – 2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy. Building on the momentum of the recently introduced Cyber Security Act 2024 , Minister for Cyber Security, Tony Burke MP, has released the Horizon 2 Policy Discussion Paper. It seeks feedback and input on key policies designed to enable Australia to: · Embed cyber messaging, cyber standards, capability and efforts. · Empower Australian businesses and citizens to protect themselves and become more resilient to cyber incidents. · Enhance cyber frameworks, workforce, and business ecosystem to drive further cyber security uplift. Consultation on the Discussion Paper is open to all levels of government, industry, educational institutions, community groups, and the Australian public. Submissions to can be made through the Department’s consultation webpage until 29 August 2025. Further industry co-design and Town Halls will also be held during the consultation process. Releasing the Discussion Paper, the Minister said: “We have made historic progress on cyber security but there is always more to do when confronting this evolving threat. Our government believes that all Australians have the right to be safe and feel safe, and cyber security is a critical part of that effort. “We’ve laid excellent foundations with Horizon 1 of the strategy and the passage of the Cyber Security Act – Horizon 2 will continue our progress towards our rightful place as a world leader on cyber security.” Submissions can be made through the Department’s consultation webpage until 29 August 2025. < News Balancing Cyber Security with Frictionless Customer Experience 17 June 2025 Cyber thieves are stealing more from businesses than “just” data and money. They’re stealing customer trust. Research shows that customers are increasingly worried about how well companies are protecting their data. And those worries are hurting companies’ bottom lines. Fears Realised Nearly 2 in 5 customers have been the victim of two or more data breaches, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. A third of the victims of identity theft have experienced it within the past three years. Stuart Vaeth, SVP of strategic business development at Trua, said cyber theft incidents weaken customer trust and brand reputation. “The result can be lost business. It absolutely impacts the reputation of the service provider,” he said. “Obviously, it erodes trust. People may not come back to your site if your data has been breached.” Research by S&P Global Market Intelligence shows that more than three-quarters of customers are concerned about the risk of trying digital experiences or products that require sharing personal data online. This is a serious challenge for businesses who recognise that customer data is essential to providing personalised purchasing experiences. Cyber Security Integral to Customer Experience The safety of customer data is as much a customer experience issue as it is a cyber security one. Sheryl Kingstone, research director of customer experience and commerce at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said that a mistake many businesses make is to look at their customer data “in a silo”. “When we do take a look at things like what CISOs want or what privacy experts want versus what marketing and customer experience teams want, it becomes very complicated, because we need to mind the gaps,” Kingstone said. “There are trade-offs between compliance and the customer experience.” “Security compliance teams look at ensuring risk and compliance. CX leaders want to reduce customer friction points,” she said. Businesses need to balance customer experience with risk and compliance. Vaeth said that, while CX leaders generally aim for zero friction to prevent drop off, some friction can be beneficial. Collecting customer data directly or asking customers for verification can provide reassurance and need not impact drop off rates. Earning Customer Trust One way to earn customer trust and assure customers you take data protection seriously is to show them your credentials. For example, you can display them on your website and in marketing materials. Another way to demonstrate your “cybertrustworthiness” is to let your customers know when you’re investing in new technologies, improving processes and gaining certifications. It demonstrates you’re on a path of continual improvement that can differentiate you from your competitors. Retiring REST A Senior Engineer provided some insight into the company’s three-year usage of GoAnywhere. Originally, when they needed to wire SFTP files to the bank, they used a homegrown tool, built internally and solely for the purpose of SFTP transfers to wire payments. However, because processes were taking too much time, they decided to look elsewhere for a better solution. What they found exceeded their original expectations. Prior to implementing GoAnywhere MFT, the process of keeping data consistent was a challenge. Stated the Senior Engineer: “Before GoAnywhere, we used the same REST call and put data in the SQL Server, but I was having a hard time with Windows vs. AWS and Azure and getting the same data repeatedly.” With GoAnywhere, Windows can grab data easily and consistently. Daily Deliveries Once the Senior Engineer learned the product, which didn’t take long, they were an expert in GoAnywhere. Now, more than 1,715 jobs are run each day. Most of the file transfers are B2B, moving from the company to a financial institution of some sort. “We wanted something that could go to a database seamlessly. We must get files to the bank in a very timely matter. Every wire file goes to the Federal Reserve and must get a Federal Reserve number before it can be funded to the bank. That all takes time. You don’t want to be at a standstill at 5:00 pm on a Friday trying to figure out why you can’t get a wire file to a bank! They’re funding loans that are $40 million!” Now the Senior Engineer can set up new transfers in just two minutes once they have all the information and can execute transfers in 10 seconds. If it clears, transfers start and stop in about one second! “Currently, we have 63 projects running in the GoAnywhere scheduler. We started with 15 and it has grown from there.” Mortgage Rate Magic Aside from the daily deliveries, the company also utilises GoAnywhere to stay one step ahead of their competition and offering the best mortgage rates possible. Mortgage rates update every minute. Because the company is committed to offering the best interest rate in the steep pool of competition, they avoid offering one single rate per day, as some of their competitors do. It’s especially important for them to pull the data in real time because even a couple of points in an interest rate change can make a big difference. GoAnywhere MFT helps the company’s competitive edge thrive and delivers an advantage by allowing real-time interest rate comparison. “We use MFT to get the latest mortgage rates available,” the Senior Engineer said. “We have several applications that use these rates. Each time you pull the rates, it costs money. Instead of having each application pull rates, we have MFT make a REST call to grab the rates and push them into a SQL Server, for all of our on-premises dotnet applications to use.” All applications that need the updated rates call the SQL Server to get the rates in real time. From there on, the rates are formatted into a JSON file and sent to AWS, where the rest of their cloud-based apps can use them. All applications have the same data source that is updated at the same time; therefore, they only need one outbound call to grab the rates. All the apps in the AWS environment can also get the necessary rates at the exact same time. It doesn’t matter which application connects; it should get the same rate. Exceeding Expectations Among transferring files securely, upgrades and updates for GoAnywhere MFT have served as an additional, yet unexpected benefit for the company. They have been easy to complete, and the Senior Engineer was able to successfully conduct their company’s annual disaster recovery (DR) test without fail. Overall, the Senior organization is very satisfied with their experience using GoAnywhere MFT. At this commercial real estate company, GoAnywhere’s flexibility is exploited for a great many time-saving projects, allowing valuable staff and system time to be directed to other areas. Businesswire found that 82% of companies experienced at least one downtime incident during the past three years… costing small businesses $660 per minute, and larger organisations $14,000 per minute. Load balancing is a key technique for keeping network traffic flowing. What is Load Balancing? Load balancing is key to “clustering”, where multiple systems work together as a single unit to help ensure high-availability, scalability, and reliability. It’s a technique which enables organisations to distribute workloads and network traffic across multiple servers or network interfaces in a computer cluster. Effective load balancing means that network traffic is always directed to servers which are “available”, should a particular server become overwhelmed or fail. Balancing workloads optimises the performance of systems and applications –– for example, a managed file transfer (MFT) solution for exchanging data –– preventing bottlenecks and other efficiency-sapping impacts. Why Load Balance for File Transfers? Delays in sending files can have significant negative ripple effects throughout an organisation. Incoming orders may not be received, or shipping may be delayed, leading to dissatisfied customers. Delayed financial transactions with trading partners may weaken an organisation’s supply chain. HTTP/S, however, is a stateless protocol. It uses the round robin algorithm but will persist each connection for a time to maintain session integrity. HTTP/S sessions typically are only served by one HTTP/S server at a time. < News Ditch Your File Transfer Scripts 10 Sept 2024 More and more companies across the Asia-Pacific region are realising they have a pressing need to eliminate their use of outdated file transfer scripts. A Key Vulnerability A recent survey found that our region is on the frontline, subject to more cyber attacks than any other. 72% of local organisations experienced four or more cybersecurity incidents in the past year - 20% more than the global average. Manual scripts – often written by employees to reduce the repetitive burden of manually transferring files – are a key vulnerability. Not only are file transfer scripts risky, they’re also inefficient and prone to failure. MFT: safer, more efficient Managed File Transfer (MFT) is a powerful technology which comprehensively addresses the risks and challenges of moving information, both within an organisation, and with external suppliers, partners and customers. It simplifies and secures data transfer by providing centralised control, encryption, enhanced security protocols and auditing. Unsurprising then that more and more IT departments are using MFT to replace their outdated manual file transfer scripts. Reasons to Ditch Scripts Scripts don’t play well with new tech. For example, cloud-based computing environments require file transfers to be integrated with cloud-based solutions, and platforms such as Azure and AWS. Scripts lack advanced features. For example, automating file transfers – say, with FTP - requires you to add a second solution, which is time-consuming and complex. < News The Emotional Toll of Ransomware Attacks 25 Aug 2025 Sophos’s recent report The State of Ransomware 2025 sheds light on the little-discussed human impacts of cyber attacks within compromised organisations. Sophos polled 3,400 IT and cyber security leaders across 17 countries who had been hit by ransomware in the past year. Aside from the financial and reputational costs to the organisations, Sophos found that the organisation’s IT and cyber security teams suffered negative personal consequences from every attack. Taking the Fall The fallout from a cyber attack was often most severe at the top of the IT team. In one in four cases, the team’s leadership was replaced as a consequence. That might seem “fair” to some. However, as most CISOs will tell you, business investment decisions are frequently made at the Line of Business level. CISO projects and investment requests are considered alongside other business priorities and investments – sometimes, deprioritised and rejected. In those instances, is it reasonable to hold the CISO accountable? As Frank Dickson, group VP for security at IDC, remarked to CSOonline.com : “Some presume that a ransomware attack is the fault of the CISO. The CISO is a leader, but not the leader. Breaches are the result of a pattern of decisions of many.” Dickson said that some enterprise business units — even some CEOs and COOs — will sidestep CISOs by deliberately not inviting them to key meetings, out of the fear they will slow down certain business processes. With the growing frequency of cyber attacks, and the considerable business disruption they create, that’s shortsighted and risky. Emotional Toll Sophos’ survey found that the human consequences of a cyber attack were felt well beyond the leadership level. 41% of IT/cybersecurity teams reported increased anxiety or stress about future attacks. 34% said the team felt guilty that the attack was not stopped in time. 40% reported increased pressure from senior leaders - though 31% reported increased recognition. 31% of teams experienced staff absences due to stress/mental health issues related to the attack. The survey responses reveal how a ransomware attack can be a brutal blow — not just to an organisation’s finances and reputation, but to the people responsible for the IT systems. For the IT team, it’s often a high-stakes, high-pressure ordeal. HR & C-Level Support An organisation’s Human Resources team and C-suite need to play a critical role in stabilising the IT team in the aftermath of a ransomware crisis. That begins with providing immediate support: Acknowledging the pressure, and recognising within the organisation the IT team's efforts. Providing flexible work arrangements, such as adjusted hours, remote work options, and time off where feasible. Making psychological first aid and counsellors available. Ensuring clear internal communication, to avoid the stresses of miscommunication and rumours. Longer term, the focus should be on building IT team resilience. Recognising and rewarding the IT team's role in recovery. Conducting cyber security training across departments - not just IT – to reinforce a culture of shared responsibility. Implementing retention strategies to mitigate post-ransomware attack attrition.
