    < News New Security Standards for NZ Government Agencies 24 June 2025 New Zealand's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has drafted Cyber Security Standards which government agencies will be required to adopt and implement later this year. The new standards outline the minimum cybersecurity practices that agencies must adopt for their business-critical and external-facing systems. In general terms, they require that cyber security policies, capabilities, controls, and practices must be well-formed and repeatable. The Standards 10 draft Standards are currently being discussed with agencies and industry partners as part of pre-implementation consultation and feedback gathering. They are: 1. Security Awareness 2. Risk Management 3. Assets and their Importance 4. Secure Software Configuration 5. Patching 6. Multi-factor Authentication 7. Detect Unusual Behaviour 8. Least Privilege 9. Data Recovery 10. Response Planning Maturity Model The draft Standards feature a built-in Capability Maturity Model (CMM) to help agencies standardise how they measure, track and improve their cyber risk management over time. CMM1 “Informal”: Security capability may be ad-hoc, unmanaged or unpredictable. Success may rely on individuals rather than institutional capability. CMM2 “Planned and Tracked”: Security capability is well formed in designated business units. The security policies, capabilities, control and practices are in place and repeatable. They are designed to meet the organisation’s core security requirements. CMM3 “Standardised”: Security capability is standardised, integrated, understood and followed consistently across the enterprise. Security is well-governed and managed at an enterprise level. CMM4 “Quantitatively Controlled”: Security capability and performance is measured, monitored and objectively and quantitively controlled. Security measures are hardened in response to performance alerts. Security is a strategic focus for the organisation. CMM5 “Optimising”: Security capability adapts to a dynamic, high risk operating environment. Practices are generally recognised as world-leading and have near real-time measurement and response mechanisms. Agencies will be required to meet at least Capability Maturity Model level two (CMM2) for their business-critical and external-facing systems. Consultation Phase underway The NCSC began consulting with affected agencies and industry partners on 16 June. Discussions will continue until 4 July 2025, with final Standards planned for publication in October 2025. Agencies will be required to report on their implementation of the standards as part of Protective Security Requirements reporting process (a framework for managing security within NZ government organisations) in April 2026. The initial draft of the NCSC’s Minimum Cyber Security Standards are available for download from the NCSC website .     < News Small-to-Medium Businesses the Big Targets for Cybercrime 17 Mar 2024 While cyberattacks on large corporates make the headlines, it’s small to medium businesses who are being hit the hardest. The 2024 Sophos Threat Report found that the sophistication of cyberthreats faced by small to medium organisations is often on par with those used to attack large enterprises. Apparently, while the amount of money that can be stolen is less than that available from a larger organisation, cybercriminals more than make up the difference in the volume of thefts. More vulnerable, greater impact Sophos say that organisations with fewer than 500 employees are not only more vulnerable to cybercriminals, they also suffer more proportionally from the results of cyberattacks. The greater vulnerability is due to a lack of experienced security operations staff, underinvestment in cybersecurity, and smaller information technology budgets. And, when these businesses are hit by cyberattacks, the expense of recovery forces many to close. Attractive Ransomware Targets 90% of the world’s businesses are small- and medium-sized. In Australia, these businesses contribute more than 60% of the nation’s overall GDP. According to The Institute for Security and Technology’s Ransomware Task Force, 70% of ransomware attacks target small to medium businesses. Other Prevalent Threats Beyond Ransomware, a variety of other cyberthreats also pose an existential threat to small and medium businesses. Data theft is the focus of most malware targeting small and medium businesses. Password stealers, keyboard loggers, and other spyware make up nearly half of malware detections. Credential theft through phishing and malware can expose small businesses’ data on cloud platforms and service providers, and network breaches can be used to target their customers as well. Web-based malware distribution — through “malvertising” or malicious search engine optimisation — is also on the rise. Unprotected devices connected to organisational networks — including unmanaged computers without security software installed, improperly configured computers and systems running software fallen out of support by manufacturers — are a primary point of entry. Attackers are increasingly abusing device drivers — both vulnerable drivers from legitimate companies, and malicious drivers that have been signed with stolen or fraudulently obtained certificates. Email attacks have begun to feature more active engagement with targets over email, using a thread of emails and responses to make their lures more convincing. Attacks on mobile device users, including social engineering-based scams tied to the abuse of third-party services and social media platforms, have grown exponentially, affecting individuals and small to medium businesses. Your Data is Their Target The greatest cybersecurity challenge facing organisations of all sizes is data protection. More than 90% of attacks reported to Sophos involved data or credential theft, with methods ranging from ransomware attacks, to data extortion, unauthorised remote access, and simple data theft. Compromised business email userids are also a substantial problem for small to medium businesses, and the next most prevalent threat after ransomware. Stolen credentials, including browser cookies, can be used to compromise business email userids, provide unauthorised access to third-party services such as cloud-based finance systems, and entry to internal resources. Turning Your Own Tech Against You Sophos said that, as 2023 progressed, they observed an increase in the use of remote execution of ransomware. Unmanaged devices on an organisation’s own network were hijacked to encrypt files on other systems via network file access. Small and medium businesses also need to be concerned about the security of the services they depend upon to manage their business. Attacks against managed service providers became an enduring part of the ransomware playbook in 2023.     < News 55T Australian File Transfers in 2025 – How We Calculated that Number 20 Jan 2026 We recently shared that Australians performed about 55 trillion file transfers in 2025. Here’s how we were able to arrive at that total. More than Manual When we talk about digital activity, we tend to picture the visible layer: emails, shared documents, cloud uploads, and messaging app attachments. However, these human‑initiated actions represent only a sliver of the real story. Beneath the surface lies a vast, automated, always‑on ecosystem of backups, sync operations, content delivery networks, and machine‑to‑machine exchanges. No dataset directly reports “file transfers,” so I needed rely on authoritative adjacent metrics: including internet usage, cloud adoption, CDN penetration, and digital‑behaviour statistics. Using AI to comb and extrapolate from available data sources, I built a structured model which quantifies each of the contributing layers. Human‑Initiated File Transfers (~82B) I began with the most intuitive category: files deliberately sent or uploaded by people. Using Australia’s 2025 population (~27M), daily internet usage (97%), and workforce composition, we modelled two groups: • Digital workers sending ~22 files/day (email attachments, cloud uploads, collaboration tools). • General consumers sending ~2.3 files/day (messaging media, photo uploads, social posts). This produced a national total of ~225M files/day, or ~82B per year. Significant, but only the beginning. Automated System Backups (~11T) Modern organisations rely heavily on incremental cloud backups. We estimated: • ~200,000 Australian organisations using automated backup • ~5M files represented in each organisation’s backup set • ~3% of files changing daily This yields ~30B backup‑related file movements per day, or ~11T annually. Backups alone dwarf all human‑initiated activity. Cloud Sync Events (~115B) Cloud sync is the quiet workhorse of digital life - photo libraries, document updates, app data, and multi‑device workflows. With ~60% of Australians using at least one active sync service and ~20 sync events per user per day, we estimate: • ~314 million sync events/day • ~115 billion/year CDN Object Transfers (~34.4T) Every webpage or app screen is assembled from dozens of discrete objects — scripts, images, stylesheets, media chunks. We modelled: • ~300 page/app requests per user per day • ~15 objects per request • ~80% served via CDN This produces ~94B CDN object transfers per day, or ~34.4 trillion per year. This is the single largest contributor. Machine‑to‑Machine Movement (~11.4T) Microservices, logs, IoT payloads, replication events, and internal API calls generate enormous background traffic. Using a conservative multiplier (25% of the combined backup + sync + CDN volume), we estimate: • ~11.4 trillion M2M object movements annually The Total: 50–60T Transfers Summing all layers — human, automated, infrastructural, and machine‑driven — produces a national estimate of ~55T file and object transfers in 2025. Humans account for less than 0.2% of the total. The rest is infrastructure talking to itself. Why This Makes MFT a Must When file movement reaches this scale, traditional ad‑hoc transfer methods — email attachments, unsecured FTP servers, manual uploads — simply cannot cope. They lack visibility, governance, encryption consistency, and auditability. Worse, they create blind spots where sensitive data can leak or compliance obligations can be breached. Meeting Your Business’s CDR Obligations Australia’s Consumer Data Right (CDR) requires businesses to carefully plan how they handle, store and disclose the consumer data they collect. The CDR provides individuals with the right to access their personal information, and the right of data portability found in the European General Data Protection Right (GDPR). An economy-wide program, it was launched in 2020, and is presently being rolled out sector by sector. CDR enables consumers to safely and conveniently elect to share data about them, held by data holders, with accredited providers. The government’s aim with the program is to make it easier for consumers to compare products and services, access better value and improved services, and assist financial management. Phased Rollout CDR has already been rolled out to the banking and energy sectors. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and co-regulator the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner are responsible for ensuring accredited providers and data holders comply with their CDR obligations. As companies and consumers have greater access to data, and more data files are being transferred than ever before, greater safeguards to protect this data are required. Regulators are deploying a range of tools to monitor and access the available information to ensure consumers have their data security and integrity in place. Their stated goal is to prevent breaches of the CDR’s obligation through compliance management and enforcement. Business Impact Businesses need to consider how they handle the data they collect, including how that data is harvested, stored, used and disclosed, and how it will make consumer data available to its customers and their nominated recipients when requested to do so. Special care of internal systems, processes and compliance is required to prevent breaches. The GoAnywhere server can be deployed on the secure network and the solution’s Secure Gateway can act as the link to the public internet in the DMZ. An administrator can enable curated access to internal REST APIs that would normally be available only via VPN or by a dedicated network connection. GoAnywhere HTTPS You can use GoAnywhere HTTPS project tasks to automate file transfers, create Secure Mail Packages, or programmatically place files in Secure Folders for uploading or downloading For example, if you need to send a large, automatically generated report to a user, you can enable the GoAnywhere HTTPS Send Package task in GoAnywhere. Simply create a project to automatically pick a file (or files) and send a package as a link via Secure Mail. You can protect that package with a password, track the number of downloads, or prevent further downloads after 24 hours. Another GoAnywhere HTTPS task is the ability to set up programmable uploads to GoDrive, a solution which provides Enterprise File Sync and Sharing (EFSS) services for employees and partners. 4. Quick Uploads Enabling Quick Uploads in HTTP Service enables you to turn GoAnywhere into a REST endpoint for file exchange. Quick Uploads (which requires a POST Method with Authentication) allows the solution to upload files to GoAnywhere via REST, effectively turning your GoAnywhere Secure Folders feature into a REST-enabled file exchange gateway. REST-enabled file exchange is very useful for other applications to have a place to store and exchange files. The end users don’t really know what is happening under the hood, but it allows application developers to provide lots of flexibility and build easy-to-use applications. 5. Project Run Mode You can start a project in the background in the dashboard's triggers, schedules, and within the project designer’s Call Project task. For example, if you need to start a long-running job, you simply start a job in Batch mode, which will run in the background, and the system will be automatically notified when it is finished. Need to copy a huge file set? Then run a Job that spawns multiple Batch Jobs. For example, every sub folder in your file set could be sent as separately spawned batch jobs. In addition to setting the run mode, you can also set the priority and the job queue. For example, some long-running CPU intensive jobs, such as archiving or backup, can be set to run on a lower priority status or on a lower priority queue so that your core MFT operations remain more responsive. 6. Consume Third-Party APIs Consuming APIs is the process by which an application developer accesses the various APIs that are exposed by the API provider and then uses those APIs to develop one’s own software applications and products. Within GoAnywhere you can use HTTP/HTTP Post and GET Project tasks or Webservices REST tasks to call third-party APIs. For example, once a file is uploaded, you can create a trigger that will automatically import the file into third-party applications, such as a CRM or trouble ticketing system.
