    < News Configure Multiple MFT Gateways for Military-Grade File Transfer Security 9 Sept 2026 Every organisation sharing files requires security to protect their valuable data assets. But nowhere is this more important than in the defence industry, where thwarting intrusions by malicious hackers requires the most secure file transfer solutions. The Challenge Government agencies, military departments and contractors face many challenges to their routine transfers of highly confidential and time-sensitive information. They are typically reliant on large data sets, which can be slow to deliver. The data being exchanged must be protected in transit as well as when it’s stored. Plus, tracking file delivery and successful receipt in the heat of the moment can be mission critical. Defence industry organisations need to know that their information can be exchanged efficiently and securely across their own departments, and sometimes out to external agencies. Transactions may occur across a variety of network links spanning numerous territories. To maintain high security for accessing secure information, sharing videos from an active military installation, or preparing an off-site recovery backup, infrastructure must be put into place to ensure file transfers can be streamlined and simplified without heavy IT administration. Secure File Sharing for High-Security-Needs Industries Meeting the security policies and substantial compliance regulations and requirements of military and defence departments, as well as those policies of other government agencies and their contractors, requires secure file transfer that goes beyond getting files from point A to point B. Not only do these file sharing solutions need to meet federal government compliance mandates, in some situations, they also need to be able to segment or airgap their file exchanges to physically separate networks or computers so they can operate as separate entities or networks. U.S. Defence Contractor Case Study The way one large U.S. defence contractor configures GoAnywhere demonstrates the advantages of multiple gateways. They had been using a homegrown file transfer solution to meet their general file transfer needs. While their solution easily accomplished standard data exchanges, their defence contract required multiple gateways for security and compliance purposes. GoAnywhere MFT offered the ideal single MFT environment plus the ability to utilise multiple gateways to provide security in a more segmented fashion. In the sample architecture accompanying this article, you can see how GoAnywhere MFT is deployed in a single, secure network segment (OT networked) and GoAnywhere Gateway is strategically deployed in the DMZ and additional network segments. MFT initiates all communications to each Gateway instance, minimising exposure to the Secure OT network.   This design eliminates the need to open any inbound ports into the secure zone, enabling user access from the different network segments. Additionally, file transfers can be facilitated to/from external partners through the Gateway deployed in the DMZ.  This scenario is an optional, but atypical use case. To automate internal file movement across security boundaries, GoAnywhere Agents can be deployed without requiring any additional port openings. Agents leverage the Gateway for all communication and data transfers, ensuring a streamlined and secure file exchange process.  In this scenario, GoAnywhere MFT’s Secure Mail  module is used as a peer-to-peer solution within the contractor’s network. It incorporates security controls, such as automatic AES-256 bit encryption, restricted access controls, and a configurable data retention policy, so that employees sharing files with other employees or with external parties can be assured that even if an intrusion in another segment of the organisation occurs, the data contained on the network with a particular gateway remains isolated from that cyber threat. File Integrity Checking via Checksum Military operations need to be particularly careful that files which are sent arrive unaltered. GoAnywhere’s checksum task can be inserted into any workflow to verify the integrity of files, generating a unique hash value which accompanies any data sent. When the data is received, the same algorithm is applied to the data and compared to the original to confirm the data’s authenticity.     < News Phishing Surges on the Back of QR Codes 17 July 2025 New research published by the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) shows that phishing attempts have surged to levels not seen since late 2023. QR codes are increasingly the attack vector of choice. Each day, millions of emails are sent containing QR codes that lead consumers to phishing sites and malware. Q1 Lowlights · APWG observed a total of 1,003,924 phishing attacks in the first quarter of 2025 - the largest number of attacks per quarter since late 2023. · Attacks against the online payment and financial sectors grew in Q1 2025, comprising 30.9% of all attacks. · The total number of wire transfer Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks increased by 33% in Q1 2025 compared to the previous quarter. Most Targeted Industries The SaaS/Webmail sector was the most targeted industry by cyber attackers in Q1 2025, making up almost 18% of the total attack volume. The financial industry also continues to be a highly attractive sector for cyber threat attackers, with Payment, Banking, and Crypto contributing to approximately 33% of all phishing attacks in Q1 2025. QR Codes Popular QR code attacks occur when an adversary leverages QR codes to social engineer a user, such as redirecting a victim to a phishing website or to download a malicious attachment. QR codes are becoming an increasingly popular phishing tactic due to the various features they offer. Cyber attackers have been observed taking advantage of QR code features in the following ways: · The availability of free QR code generators facilitates phishing attacks due to decreased financial costs of infrastructure, and free services tend to have less resources dedicated to takedowns of legitimate service abuse and other malicious activity. · Attackers can combine QR codes with URL shorteners to obscure the true destination of the URL and thereby direct victims to malicious sites. ASD defines legacy technology as “any technology no longer supported by the manufacturer, developer or vendor”. These technologies don’t receive important security updates and patches, and this makes them much more vulnerable to cyber attacks.  However, the threat isn’t only to the legacy systems themselves. Cyber thieves can also exploit vulnerabilities in legacy technology to gain access to the modern systems that your organisation relies on.  The ASD says that managing legacy technology is a priority in maintaining the overall cyber security of your organisation. They counsel replacing it with technology that is still receiving support and updates from the manufacturer, developer or vendor. Legacy Scripts A related example of a legacy technology that’s way past it’s use-by date is the use of file transfer scripts to move sensitive data between systems. For years, organisations relied on home‑grown file transfer scripts to shuttle data between systems, partners, and applications. Scripts were simple, cheap, and easy to tweak.     < News Companies ignoring hack warnings 4 Oct 2024 Almost half of the businesses warned by Australia’s top cyber security agency of impending hacks didn’t bother to return the phone call. In an alarming disclosure to The Australian Financial Review, the new director-general of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), Abigail Bradshaw, said that the agency had contacted organisations 620 times in the last 12 months to tell them it had information “that suggests that you might have a problem”. But of those calls, 280 were never returned. Bradshaw said the agency shared such information because it had been shown to help companies to achieve positive outcomes in the face of escalating threats while enabling The ASD to detect more incidents. Sharing Encouraged The ASD’s alerts are part of a broader government plan to encourage more information sharing. New rules recently announced will permit businesses to share private details with government agencies without concern it will be used against them in future damages claims. That being said, regulators are still tightening the screws on directors and executives to take responsibility for cyber security prevention and recovery. The new laws won’t provide “immunity” for those who fail to prepare in the months or years leading up to a hack. Hacking: this century’s “H-Bomb” Not only is cybercrime financially lucrative for ransomware gangs, but digital attacks are becoming a critical component of geopolitical conflict, Bradshaw said. “The line between state-based actors and criminal actors is becoming finer,” she said. Cybercrime and conflict are set to escalate as quantum computing coupled with artificial intelligence supercharges hacking efforts. The US’s Pentagon described that emerging combination as “the 21st century’s equivalent of the nuclear bomb”. The Australian Financial Review warned that “if you get caught out by a cyberattack which causes broader harm, directors will not be able to talk their way out of trouble by saying they thought their techies had it covered”.
